London City Airport

The extension of the DLR to London City Airport will provide a direct rail connection from Canning Town to the airport.  The railway will leave the existing Beckton extension of the DLR at Canning Town, passing under the Lower Lea Crossing across Thames Wharf.  It will rise to elevated track and run on the south side of the North Woolwich Road, utilising some of the former Silvertown Tramway alignment.

The railway will then pass over the North Woolwich Roundabout, across the Silvertown Triangle and along Hatmann Road to the existing site of Drew Road Primary School, where the London City Airport station will be situated.

After the airport station the track will drop to ground level on the south side of the airport car park, where it will continue to a station at King George V dock.  Trains are set to run every 12 minutes and every 6 minutes during periods of high demand for those travelling to Bank and Canary Wharf (20 train movements/hour).

Woolwich Arsenal

Continuing from the King George V station, a 2.5 km extension under the Thames, surfacing at Burrage Road in South Woolwich, is planned. This will be linked to the National Rail line platforms at Woolwich Arsenal station.  Tunnel boring machines will be used to excavate twin tunnels with the spoil being brought to the surface in Newham.  This will provide a link between north and south of the river.  It is predicted that journey time from Woolwich Arsenal to Canary Wharf would be 18 minutes.

Dagenham Dock

Currently under active consideration is a further extension to Barking and Dagenham, a 5.5 km line is proposed to run from Gallions Reach to Dagenham Dock, via riverside development and crossing the Roding.
