Shortlands Junction was a project on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link to remodel the junction to enable Channel Tunnel and local commuter trains to operate together safely on this part of the network. The remodelling of the junction and proposed grade-separated junction allows train routes to be planned more efficiently according to usage rather than direction. This reduces the number of potentially conflicting movements between local and inter-continental trains and also provides some line speed improvements. The project involved around 1.5km of new track layout, including simplified switch and crossing layouts, associated third rail electrification and signalling, construction of a 70m long reinforced concrete box section tunnel and similar 18m long bridge beneath the existing roadway.
